One of the very best things about spending time with clients is that oftentimes the experience doesn’t end when the session does. I’m fortunate to have made new friends and repeat customers. Last week I got to photograph the christening ceremony of baby “A”. But before that I met him as a newborn for his in-home newborn photography session. This kid is absolutely exploding with character and he hasn’t changed a bit in the weeks since I first met him. When not asleep, he rocks a startled look at least 50% of the time. This has no doubt been reinforced by the reactions of everyone he meets. Man is he a charmer! He spent some of the session awake so we could see those wild eyes of his. Then he settled into a perfect slumber that made me SURE I wanted to do a lot more of this!
For the first parts, we got him in high-contrast black and white with his parents. His incredible personality made even more dynamic with the style of the shots. He spent some time getting warmed and fed by mom in his homemade quilt before he settled in for a nap. His moms wanted to stay fairly neutral in color so we went with white and a slightly bluish grey cheesecloth wrap that I dyed myself. Surrounded on 3 sides by a wall of windows, the lighting in this room was the exact opposite of my last shoot – almost too much. But we sat there together like kitties in the warm sunshine. He was the kind of baby that you could pose and he’d settle right back down to sleep. An absolute dream!
All of these crazy faces were made within just a few seconds….
And then from another angle…
Time for a break after lunch. The look they always give mom is so precious.
Once this little guy was out, he was content to stay that way. At first I was timid, but eventually realized that you really can just mold them like putty if you make small movements and hold them until they take. Aaand now I am so in love with newborn sessions that I never want to stop!
